Do I Need an Extraction?

When it comes to oral health issues, we do everything we can to preserve your natural teeth as long as possible. However, there are certain situations where removing one or more teeth can be the best choice for your long-term oral health. Here are some of the most common reasons for recommending an extraction:

When you come to our office for an extraction, we strive to make your treatment comfortable and convenient. The extraction process takes place over four stages, and we take the time at each step to ensure you are confident in the care you receive.

Planning Treatment

As we evaluate your tooth, we explore all possible avenues of treatment. You can rest assured that we will not recommend an extraction unless it offers significant benefits for your oral health. Once you choose to proceed with the extraction, we consider the details of your case to decide on the most effective techniques. We'll also discuss whether your case complexity requires the care of our in-house specialist.

Performing the Extraction

On the day of treatment, you'll be welcomed to our office and made comfortable. We offer various sedation options to meet your needs, and can even offer IV sedation during procedures performed by the oral surgeon.

Dr. Shay performs most extractions and has experience with simple and wisdom tooth extractions. The oral surgeon will come directly to our office to provide care for any unique or complex needs. Undergoing treatment in our office with a team you know and trust can also make things more comfortable and convenient for you.

Aftercare

When your treatment is complete, you'll be able to return home and rest. Depending on the level of sedation you receive, you may be able to drive yourself or may need someone to assist you. The length of recovery also depends on factors such as how many teeth were removed and whether they were incisors, molars, or wisdom teeth. On average, it takes about 7-10 days for the affected area to heal.

It's important not to disturb the blood clot that forms in the extraction area, as it is vital to the healing process. Dislodging it can dry out the socket and cause pain. Be careful not to disturb the treatment site, and avoid any activity that causes suction or strong force, such as rinsing, spitting, or drinking through a straw.

You can take steps to make the recovery process feel more comfortable and go smoothly. Dr. Shay will talk you through these and other details:

• Take painkillers as they're prescribed. Some pain or aching is common, but be sure to contact us if the pain is intense or does not improve over time.
• Keep the gauze in place for at least 3-4 hours following treatment to allow proper clotting.
• Apply a cold pack to your face around the affected area. Remove the cold pack after ten minutes, as too much cold can slow healing.
• Be sure to rest for 24 hours after your procedure, and avoid strenuous activity for a couple of days after.
• Continue brushing and flossing after treatment, but be careful to avoid the site of the extraction.

We will schedule a follow-up visit so that Dr. Shay can ensure your mouth is healing well and there's no sign of infection.
